Hints & Tips

Start your new project by getting a clear idea of what you want. Changing your mind along the way is OK but could cost you time and added expence. Why not start a 'concept board' where you can have image clippings ( or tile/stone samples, magazine cut outs or web sites) of the elements you would like to see in your finished project. I encourage you to write down everything that comes to mind. Don't be concerned about how ambitious your ideas may seem, how much you think it may cost, or even if one of your ideas seems in total contrast to another. Remember to note any special materials, plants, colours and styles you like and so on.

Tip: 'Steal' from the experts by looking at magazines and / or visiting display homes for ideas

Things to consider:

Its best to keep the cost of your renovations in line with your home's market value. Do not over-capitalise by letting your home renovation make your home the most valuable in your area as you might be making it difficult to sell your home for its full value.

Also, plan renovations that will add more value to your home than their cost. For example, painting a home often makes it more valuable and attractive, and can be done at a relatively low cost.

 -  bathroom & kitchen makeovers

Select quality fixtures and fittings in bathrooms and kitchens. If your budget won't stretch to it, then stick to the mid-range — - never choose the cheapest taps, benches or handles. Consider 'cleaning' when selecting your tile and grout colour. Take care to allow for enough bench space next to your vanity basin and make sure you design for appropriate storage space for toiletries and the like.

 -  for a room renovation

Consider your room layout and function. You can make a great impact by changing light fittings and adding enough power points in the right locations. Think carefully about your colour palette and consider speaking to a colour consultant. Companies such as Wattyl (www.wattyl.com.au) and Dulux (www.dulux.com.au) can assist you to find a consultant.

Pick elements, finishes, textures and colours that you like - maybe borrow from your existing furniture? It is generally a good idea to have a central colour 'theme' run through your home decor.
